A surprise hit when it debuted in 1994, it didn’t get the ratings of its NBC lead-in situation comedy Seinfeld. But CBS–which aired Friends after its own ratings powerhouse, Cheers–gave it another chance. Friends finally caught on among a young audience and went on to become the most popular series in TV history.
